The Brief

While the initial direction was more traditional, the WHSPA team quickly realised they wanted something bolder. After discovering our work on Instagram, they were drawn to Helm’s colourful, expressive design approach. The brief evolved to focus on banners that felt fashion-forward, playful, and art-driven, without relying on photography or the school emblem.

They wanted each faculty, from English and Mathematics to Music and PDHPE, to feel unique yet cohesive, with a colour palette that leans into blues, greens, and pops of complementary tones.

The Approach

We approached the WHSPA banners like a series of art pieces - each one distinct, yet all connected by a unified creative system.

At the heart of the design is a custom WHSPA icon, created as a visual signature for the series. Inspired by Wollongong’s coastal landscape, the form takes cues from ocean curves, coral textures, and organic movement, a nod to the school’s creative and coastal identity.

This motif became the foundation for each banner’s abstract patterning, shaping a nautical-meets-creative theme that feels vibrant, expressive, and fluid - perfectly suited to a performing arts school known for its movement, rhythm, and colour.

Each faculty was then given its own energy and accent colours, ensuring individuality within a cohesive system. The result: a set of banners that feel alive, connected through shape, form, and the creative pulse of WHSPA.

The Outcome

The final suite of 12 banners captures the school’s creative spirit with a sophisticated, coastal twist. The custom icon and pattern language elevate what could have been typical school signage into something more like an art installation - one that celebrates identity, movement, and community.
